SCHOOL BOXING

LIMBER LADS IN RING G. CASSIN CHAMPION Though the district boxing authority has suspended tournament activities for the season, the sport still flourishes in the schools, and the. annual tournament of the Gisborne High School, held in the assembly hull last evening, indicated that there will be plenty of talent developing for the days when boxing comes into its own again. A total of 29 bouts was stager], chief interest centring on the championship contests, for which there were four entrants, G. Cassin emerging the title-winner. Several of the challenge bouts rivalled the title matches for energy and keenness, and in two cases bouts ended in the first round when participants ran into trouble and became unable to carry on. At an interval in the programme the rector, Mr. J, Hutton, expressed the thanks of the school to the Gisborne Boxing Association, the executive of which provided judges and other oflicials for the tournament. "We should hardly be able to carry on the sport of boxing in the school without the co-operation and interest shown to us, year by year by Mr. Jack Heeney,” said Mr. Hutton amidst applause. He also tendered thanks to Sergeant-Major L. R. Stichbury, the referee, and others who had helped to promote the sport of boxing in the school. Bouts resulted as under:— School Championship In the first bout of the school championship, L. Ngata, 11.0, met 1. McCallum, 10.2. and had a good bit the better of file first round. He tired in the second, and Me Call urn put on a strong spurt in the last round to win narrowly. G. Cassia, 10.4, had an advantage in reach over G. Allen, 10.2, in the other firstround bout of the championship. He kept his head up, and timed his shots well, piling up an early lead against his bustling opponent. Allen fought well, but was outclassed. Cassia’s timing was again a feature of thermal with McCallum, and in the first round he looked ail over a winner. McCallum had had a harder fight in the elimination round, and this told on him in the torrid toe-to-toe battle for the championship. At the close of the second round Cassin was well ahead on points, and he started the third with a barrage that finished off McCallum, the referee stopping the fight to avoid unnecessary punishment for McCallum.
