The Ngaiterangi tribe who had been helping the Waikatos to fight the Europeans, were holding the fortified pa, situated a few miles from Tauranga. On April 29th, 1864, General Cameron with a large force attacked the position, and late in the afternoon ordered an assault to be made. Although greatly outnumbered, the brave Maori defenders repelled the attack and inflicted heavy casualties.
