FOOT SHATTERED

SURFACEMAN’S INJURY WAIOEKA ACCIDENT As the result of a blasting accident on the Waioeka road yesterday, Mr. Arthur Taylor, a surfaceman, was admitted to the Cook Hospital during the afternoon with one foot shattered and other injuries of a minor character. There was no witness of the accident, and Mr. Taylor lay on the roadside until just after midday, when he was discovered by Mr. Cunningham, manager of a property, at Wairata. Mr. Cunningham conveyed the injured man to Matawai, for attention by the district nurse, who, however, had left for the Cook Hospital with another case and was unavailable. He then proceeded to Gisborne with Mr. Taylor. It was reported this morning from the hospital that Mr. Taylor had had a fair night and was comfortable. The victim of the accident is a widower, his wife having died three years ago. He is employed by the Public Works Department in maintaining a section of the Waioeka Valley road, and is well known to regular users of the highway, as well as to the settlers of the neighbourhood, by whom he is held in much esteem. Mr. Taylor served in the last war with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.
