88TH BIRTHDAY

MR. JOHN CHAMBERS There was a big gathering of relatives and friends at the homestead of Mr. John Chambers, of Mokopuka, Havelock North, on Sunday, when he celebrated his eigthy-eigth birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Chambers were host and hostess. Mr. M. H. Campbell proposed the health of Mr. Chambers and briefly recalled his pioneering work in Hawke's 'Bay and the long and faithful friendships which he had formed. Mr. Chambers went to Hawke’s Bay as an infant in 1854. and with his brothers grew up at Te Mata, where his father established this well-known sheep run. He rode to school at Wanganui, travelling frequently via the coast and over the ranges into the Pohangina Valley. On some trips he spent the night in a whare on the clearing where Palmerson North now stands. In 1869 he travelled through Taupo to Tauranga and stayed for a day with the Armed Constabulary outpost at Opepe, near Taupo. Some four months later that men in. this outpost were wiped out by one of Te Kooti’s raiding parties.
