HARRYING JAPS.

CHINESE GUERRILLAS CHECKING WITHDRAWAL USE OF UNITS ELSEWHERE (Reed. Aug. 12, 9 a.m.) SHANGHAI, Aug. 11. A message from Chengchow, Hunan, quotes a high Chinese military authority as stating that the Chinese had commenced a general guerrilla coun-ter-attack on the Japanese northward across the Yellow River in an effort to prevent the withdrawal of Japanese garrisons for use either in Russia or Malaya. Shanghai military reports said that numerous wounded were already reaching Pekin as a result of fighting along the Yellow River. The Chengchow authority added that the Chinese move was a result of the unwritten Anglo-Chinese alliance whereby the Chinese were attacking the Japanese throughout North China to prevent Japanese withdrawals. He also said that Britain had refused a Chinese offer to send two of China’s best armies to Burma. However, Britain had agreed to the passage of Chinese troops to Burma the moment •Japan threatened Burma through Thailand. The Chinese have good stores of war materials on hand.
