INTERNED IN SYRIA CAPTIVES NOT RETURNED IMPERIAL SOLDIERS (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Presa Aaan.) (Reed. Aug. 9. 2.15 p.m.) LONDON, Aug. 8. It is officially announced in Beirut that the Vichy High Commissioner in Syria, General Dentz, and 35 Vichy officers have been interned because 75 British and Indian officers, who were captured in the Syrian campaign, arc still unaccounted for. It is believed that Vichy pilots flew ttiese officers to Greece and handed them over to the Germans. It is reported that even while General Dentz was initialling the terms of the Syrian armistice, Allied prisoners were being taken to Axis territories. These are understood to include officers from the Royal Fusilliers after the capture of El Quenitra. Despite Vichy’s bad faith, the repatriation of Vichy forces is proceeding. Several thousand have left since the detention of General Dentz.
