HOCKEY REP. TRIALS

VERY EVEN GAMES HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY The hockey representative trial games on the Childers Road Reserve on Saturday were productive of a surprisingly high standard of play, and all were evenly contested, with the following results:— Men.—A team 1, B team 1. Women.—A team 4, B team 3. Other Games.—Women’s C team nil, Girls' Reps, nil; High School boys 6, Intermediate School nil. Although the game between the two men’s sides was drawn, the B team had the territorial advantage for the greater part of the second spell, and only splendid goalkeeping against them saved the A team from defeat. The A team scored first, when Harrison, on the right wing, netted in the first half, while Taylor, by smart following in, secured the B team’s goal not long after the interval. Coker’s display in goal for the A’s was briiliant, but the full-backs did not play up to their usual good form. The halves made a sound line, with Nicoll supporting his forwards well and Tupara playing his usual strenuous game. Turbitt was the pick of the forwards. Scholium and Graham made a splendid pair of full-backs for the B team, while Ca3Sin shone out, in the halves. H. Swan played one of his best games in the forwards. The women's trial match was something of a surprise . Form in club games suggested that Poverty Bay would not secure a team good enough to lift the Lady Carroll Snield, but the good display of the sides engaged on Saturday suggested otherwise, the match being one of the best women’s trial games staged for some years. For the A team, Miss M. Wilson made a brilliant full-back, and Mrs. Pocock was the most conspicuous of the halves. The forwards were a splendid line, and on the day was the strongest part of the side, with Miss M. Brown, inside right, gohig very well. The B team was hardly as strong as the A’s in the first half, but in the second they made the most of their opportunities, the forwards getting through some attractive work at this stage, particularly Miss J. Greig. On the halves, Miss Swan was the best, while Mrs. O. Baker, making her first appearance for some years, impressed critics by her steady play. Mrs. Nicol and Miss M. Brown scored twice each for the A's and Miss J. Greig netted twice and Mrs. Sangwell once for the B’s. The schoolgirls put up a good performance to draw with the women’s C team. The girls had a splended half line, which kept their forwards well supplied and left their full-backs with very little to do, but a sound defence by the women’s C team nullified the persistent school attacks. In this respect Miss E. Wilson was the outstanding player for the women’s team, while Miss H. Smith also did well in defence. In the schoolgirls’ team, Janet Mclntyre played a splendid half game, and Connie MeCallum gave an attractive display on the right wing. High School boys had a comfortable margin of six goals over Intermediate School. Warren and Wilcox scored two goals each and Bacon and Revell one each. Intermediate put up an encouraging performance against heavier opponents, English and Bullivant being the most prominent.
