FIREPROOF CLOTHES

ALLIED TANKER CREWS MINIMISING DANGER (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 10.30 a.m RUGBY, Aug 8. Of all the war perils which are faced daily by Allied merchant seamen, probably the greatest is that faced by tanker crews operating in the danger areas. They are subject to pressing danger from their highly inflammable cargo. The latest measures to minimise the danger to the life of these gallant men is the issue of fireproof clothing. Designed to be carried by each member of the crew ,and so be immediately available, it consists of a cape of ample proportions, with a hood and gauntlets, all made in one piece of light flame-proofed fabric. This garment will give protection to the hands and face while launching lifeboats, which themselves are to be equipped with a water spraying pump and an asbestos blanket. The pump is to be so arranged that the water supoly is immediately available, and the lifeboat’s hull, masts, oars and sailcovers are to he fire-proofed.
