PATRIOTIC SHOP

£793 IN EIGHT WEEKS PARCELS FOR SOLDIERS For the eight weeks ended August 2, £793 18s 5d was raised through tbe agency of the patriotic shop in Gisborne, it was reported at a meeting of the East Coast Provincial Patriotic Council yesterday afternoon. During this period eight different districts have stocked the shop lor a week each, and one week £2ll was raised. A supply of 1000 cake-tins for the next quota of soldiers’ parcels is now on hand and will be distributed from the Gisborne zone committee’s storeroom. It is proposed to still further reduce the size of parcels so that each case when packed will contain six parcels instead of the customary five. Reports from the Waikohu, Code and Uawa zone committees were received, stating that there had been little activity during the month. Cheques for £l7l and £22 were received from the Cook and Uawa zones respectively. The campaign committee reported that victory stickers for cars were printed during the month, and there had been a ready sale for them at Is each. Permission has been granted for a flag day in November, and this is to be the principal feature of patriotic week. Confirmation of the holding of a patriotic Rugby football match on August 23 was obtained from the council.

A telegram from Mr. W. C. Kolm, who is representing the council _in Wellington, was received stating that 1215 Christmas parcels would be rerequired from the council. The secretary reported that this was an increase of slightly over 400 on last year’s number.

Advice was received from the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, stating that at present the maximum annual remittance of £3O to soldiers overseas could not be raised to £SO owing to the necessity of conserving overseas funds. He stated that approximately £300,000 already had been remitted to the forces, and with a steady augmentation in their numbers a considerable increase on this figure could be expected.

Those present at the meeting were Mrs. R. U. Burke and Messrs. N. H. Bull, chairman, C Mathews, l. J. Quigley, J. Chrisp, F. Tolerton, M. J. White, F. Ball, R. F. Gambrill, F. T. Robinson, J. G. Appleton, H. L. Tempest, A. G. Hicks, Dr. A. L. Singer, and the secretary, Mr. W. M. Jenkins.
