NAILS ON HIGHWAYS

REMOVAL URGED BY A.A. In an endeavour to clean up the highways and roads in the Gisborne district, it was decided at a recent meeting of the Gisborne advisory committee of the Autornomobile Association (Auckland) to instruct the secretary, Mr. G. Crawshaw, to write to the Gisborne Borough Council asking it to share in the cost of bringing the magnetic grader of the Main Highways Board to Gisborne. As a result of further discussion, the secretary was asked also to communicate with local bodies in the district emphasising the need for the collection of all nails and bolts alter the completion of repairs to bridges in their counties. When the condition of highways was being considered the resident A.A. patrol, Mr. G. V. Merton, and Mr. F. R. Bould, remarked' on the dangerous section of road in the vicinity of the Jerusalem Native School on the main East Coast scenic highway from Gisborne to Opctiki. Members understood that a new route had been surveyed to straighten the road by taking it behind the school, but that it would then necessitate the. removal of small pa buildings. The danger to school children would be eliminated if that was done, and Jt was decided to write to the main Highways Board suggesting that it propose to shift the buildings for the natives so that the new formation could be started.
