MATAWAI NEWS
(Herald Correspondent.) Eleven wet days were recorded last month, the total rainfall being 7.53 in„ compared with 7.25 in. on 20 days in July, 1940. There were nine frosts and one fall of snow on the hills. The monthly meeting of the Red Cross Committee and members was held in the Women’s Institute room on Saturday afternoon. A good display of work was handed in and more cutout garments distributed. A suggestion was made that sewing be undertaken at some of the meetings that coincided with the Home Guard parades, and that offers of the use of sewing machines be accepted should this be done. Another proposal was that a shop day be held in Matawai early in September. This was carried unanimously. It was announced that the hill country effort for the Gisborne patriotic shop was due in October, and it is hoped that each district will improve on its last effort in this direction.
