FIRST QUARTER OF YEAR REVENUE & EXPENDITURE (Ter Proas Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Commenting on the public accounts, the Minister of Finance, the Hon. W. Nash, gave the following comparative table of the revenue for the first three months this year, with similar figures for last year in parentheses: Taxation. Customs, £1,982,000 (£2,827,000); percentage for three months to total for year. 20 (32); beer duty, £354,000 (£374,000), 22 (23); sales tax, £710,000 (£942,000), 27 (22); highways, £846,000 (£827,000), 39 (35); stamp duties, £552,000 (£875,000). 32 (52); income lax and excess profits, £1,542,000 (£1,538.0001. 10, 10; miscellaneous, £91,000 (£69,000), 8 (6): totals, £6,077,000 (£7.452,000), 18 (21); interest, £397,000 (£314,0G0), 13 (10). Other receipts, £561.000 (£619.0001. 23 (27); grand totals, £7,035,000 (£8,385,000). 18, (21). The percentages in the case of this year are estimates. The Minister also gave a similar comparative table of expenditure for the three months ended June 30: Permanent Appropriations.—Debt services, £1,717,000 (£1,978,000). 16 (16); highways, £306,000 (£736,000), 14 (31); exchange, £693,000 (£219,000). 43 (9); other services, £55,000 (£67,000), 3 (13): totals, £2,771,000 (£3,000,000), 17 (17). Annual Appropriations.—Social services, £1,762,000 (£2,269,000), 14 (19); other votes, £1,747.000 (£2.013,0001,19 21; totals, £6,280,000 (£7,282,000), 16 (19). The percentages for this' year in the expenditure table are also estimated. Mr. Nash drew attention to the fact that the principal variations, namely, in highways and exchange, in the expenditure table were mainly of an accounting nature, due, m the first case, to portion of the highway revenue received during the quarter not having been transferred to the main highways account and, in the second case, to recoveries on account of exchange on remittances not having been received during the period,
