G.O.C. IN AUSTRALIA
MAJOR-GENERAL MACKAY CONTROL OF DEFENCE (Reed. Aug. 5, 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Aug. 4. The Australian Prime Minister, Mr. R. G. Menzies, announced that MajorGeneral Sir Iven Mackay, general officer commanding an Australian Imperial Force division in the Middle East, is to be entrusted with the command in the field of all military forces throughout Australia. That would ensure single control in the direction of military operations and measures for the defence of Australia: In future the Chief of the General Staff would be enabled to concentrate on administrative work while MajorGeneral Mackay, devoted his time to personal inspection, training and preparation of the army in Australia. Major-General Mackay would be subordinate to the Military Board, which would remain as the body advising the Army Minister, Mr. P. C. Spender. “I regard it as most fortunate that it was possible to obtain MajorGeneral Mackay for this most important position,” concluded Mr. Menzies. "He is a man of. the highest personal qualities who has given the most distinguished service in this war and the last.”
