JAPANESE DENIAL
CLASH WITH RUSSIANS (Reed. Aug. 5, noon.) SHANGHAI, Aug. 4. It is persfstently reported that Japanese and Russians engaged in large-scale hostilities on the Amur River during the week-end. The Japanese are reported to have suffered 1500, casualties. The Japanese military spokesman in Shanghai said, however, that the reported Soviet-Japanese border clash Was impossible under the present circumstances, especially in view of the border demarcation negotiations, which are at present proceeding smoothly.
