LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL MEMBERS DUE TO RETIRE Twelve out of. the 37 members of ‘he Legislative Council are due to re’ire next month unless their appointnenls are renewed.
The term of the Council’s oldest member, the Hon. Sir James Allen i Otago), expires on June 1. Sir lames, who was 8(i in February, was appointed to the Council in 1927, the vear after he had relinquished the Sigh Commissionership in London. The other members whose appointnents will have to be reviewed are the lions. ,7. Alexander, T. Blood■vorth, A. Burns and E. R. Davis (Auckland), J. McLeod (Taranaki). W. Perry and V. A. Ward <Wellington). W. Hayward and Sir R. Heaton Rhodes (Canterbury), F. Waite (Otago), and T. F. O’Byrne (Southand). Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, who was 80 in February, was appointed in 1925, and all the others in 1934.
The councillor who has been longest office is the Hon. W.' H. Mclntyre (Nelson), who has been a member once 1921. The Hon, J. A. Hanan (Southland), who was reappointed (ast year, has sat since 192 G, and the Speaker, the Hon. M, Fagan (Wellington), since 1930, Fourteen of the pret'nt Council were appointed in March, 193 G. by the Labour Government, no; ong after it attained office. Four norc now appointments were made in 1937, one in 1939 and three last year. Three councillors in addition to Sir James Allen and Sir R, Heaton Rhodes are octogenarians. They are he Hons. B. C. Robbins (Auckland), vho is 84, and the Hons. J. A. McCullough (Canterbury) and J. Goodill (Westland), who are both 81. All three were appointed in 1936. The average age of the present Council s a little above G 5. Members are ppointed for terms of seven years and receive an honorarium of .C 315 a year.
