N.Z.’S ADMIRATION
MESSAGES TO LEADERS * _ ENTERPRISE AND COURAGE ?■ . (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Messages expressing New Zealand’s admiration for their enterprise and courage were despatched by the acting Prime Minister, the Hon. W. Nash, last night to Major-General Freyberg in Cairo and to Admiral Cunningham, commander-in-chief of the Mediterranean Fleet at Alexandria. They were asked to convey the thanks of the Dominion to the men under their commands. The message to Major-General .Freyberg is as follows: “On behalf of the' Government and people of New Zealand, I extend sincere thanks for your magnificent work in Crete. Your initiative, courage, and enterprise have won you; a place in our hearts Tor ever. Please convey to all officers and men under your command the admiration, thanks and good wishes of all people in the Dominion.” Mr. Nash sent the following message to Admiral Cunningham: “We have read, and our Prime Minister has told us, of the wonderful v/ork of yourself and the men under your command in sustaining, succouring, and relieving our men in Crete. Your efforts have \inspired the people of New Zealand to continue to give all they have to free the world from the menace of Nazi domination. Will you please accept yourself and convey to your officers and men the heartfelt thanks of the Government and people of New Zealand for your magnificent enterprise and courage during the past 12 days.” . ' The Governor General, Sir Cyril ( Newall, has despatched the following message to Major-General B. C. Freyberg: “Your inspiring leadership and' the gallantry and valour of the New Zealand troops, both pakeha and Maori, together with their British and Australian comrades under your command in Crete have been magnificent and a constant source of pride and inspiration to us qll. Please convey to all ranks my most profound admiration for their heroic part in the desperate struggle, which has earned an immortal place in the pages of history-” _
