GISBQRNE BASKETBALL THREE GRADES PLAYING Play in the Poverty Buy Basketball Association’s Saturday competition was continued on the Victoria Domain over the week-end, there being keen competition in the three grades. Results:— A Grade.—High School A 37, Marathon 4. Mangapapa A 15, Tuis 7; H.S.O.G. A 1 -I, H.S.O.t'i. A 26; Public Service 20, Nurses 10. B Grade.—St. Mary’s B 1 21. H.S.O.G. B 10; Cash Stores 10. High School B 10; Eastwoods 15, St. Mary’s B2 S; Kiwi 13. Nurses B .8: Ran Aroha 13. Rata 9. . , C Grade.—Ayton House 18, High School C 29; St. Mary’s Cl 13, St. Mary’s C 27; Mangapapa C 14, St. Mary’s C 3 12. Points of Play In their match against Marathon the High School A team’s combination and goal shooting wore splendid. Marathon, playing one girl short, found it difficult to get the ball through their opponents’ strong defence. The passing and combination of the Mangapapa A team in their match against Tuis was also well up to standard. Tuis played two girls short, this proving too much of a handicap. The H.S.O.G. A 1 team had the advantage of good combination and accurate goal-shoot-ing over H.S.O.G. A2, who were inclined to bunch in the defence third. Public Service used long passes in their game against Nurses, thus making interception difficult. Nurses played well, but their goals frequently fell short. The St. Mary’s HI mid H.S.O.G. teams were fairly evenly matched, St. Mary’s showing to advantage after half-time.

The Cash Stores-High School B match was even, and the students made Cash Stores work hard for their Blight advantage. Poor shooting lost the match for High School. St. Mary’s B2 could not cope with the alertness of the Eastwoods team, whose combination was good in all thirds, especially the goal third, where Miss Lorraine Hart was outstanding. By steady play and good jumping and intercepting Kiwi were able to heat Nuhses B, whose goal, shooting was weak. The Kan Aroha-Rata match was a hardfought one With both teams playing well, but linta having little chance to intercept their opponents’ passes.
