GISBORNE RUGBY WIN DEFEAT OF ARMY TEAM By one point Poverty Bay beat an Army team in Gisborne yesterday afternoon in a fixture promoted by the Poverty Bay luigby Union as a benefit for the Gisborne soldiers’ rehabilitation fund. During the interval there was a seven-a-side match between Intermediate and Marist teams of under 7.0. It w:ih a bright interlude. Intermediate won by nine points to three. the teams in the big. match were:— Army.—Backs: N. Balfour, A. Read. E. White, B. Quinn,, R. . Carroll, J. Richards, and W. Morrison, captain. Forwards: P. Shanks. C. Hayes, C. O’Rourke, E. Gardner, J. Barbour, B. Birrell, It. Cederwall and W. Varley. Poverty Bay.—Backs:’ C. McKinley, captain, H. Read, E. Carrington, B. Malone, It. Ulay. it. There were some spirted exchanges in the opening phases of the game, and there was not much between the teams as the match advanced. Nicholson and J. O'Rourke, one try each, R. McKinley two penalty goals and a conversion, R. Clay a field goal, and Pahuru a penalty goal. For the Army team J. Barbour scored twice. C. O'Rourke, W. In one of the most exciting interprovincial Rugby matches played -in Hamilton for some /ears, the Waikato representatives defeated Auckland by 14 points to 12, this being the first time for 10 years that Waikato has won this annual match. At half-time Waikato led eight—six, and then went into a lea,d of 11 to 9. Auckland then scored and led 12—11, but in the last few minutes Higginsott kicked a great penalty goal for Waikato, who had had the pest of the match territorially.
