As a preliminary to the main fixture the Poverty Bay Rugby Union conducted a schoolboys* seven-a-sidc tournament. The net gate takings were to be devoted to the soldiers’ rehabilitation fund. , Ten school teams took part ancl played a round of five games. The competition was not on the knock-out principle In the first game of the series one of the Marist B playeis, ■ Ross Corcoran, twisted his ankle and was taken to the Cook Hospital by the St. John Ambulance. Two Intermediate School teams, A j and B, met in the semi-final of the ( Poverty Bay Football Association’s j schoolboys’ tournament this afternoon. Intermediate A defeated Intermediate B, in the semi-final round by one , goal to nil. The same teams contested the final also, and Intermediate A was successful again, this time by five goals to nil. GISBORNE BASKETBALL j The 1941 basketball season was officially opened at the Poverty Bay I Basketball Association’s courts this afternoon by the Mayoress, Mrs. N. H. j Bull, throwing the ball through the j hoop. Prior to this the president of the association, Mrs. T. J. Corkery, I introduced the Mayoress, -Mrs. W. A. Bowie, patroness of the association, I and Mr. H. H. De Costa, who was deputising in the absence of the Mayor, to the assembled teams. I

A special inarch past by the 28 teams taking part in the annual King’s Birthday tournament was staged, after which Mr. De Costa wished the association luck in its new season and Mrs. Bull netted the first official goal. Further results of the tournament are:
