PEOPLE OF EMPIRE MR. MENZIES' WARNING WAIT FOR U.S. AID (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. June 2, 2.15 p.m.) MELBOURNE, June 2. The Australian Prime Minister, Mr. R. G. Menzies, in speeches during the week-end, said the war was approaching a climax. In the next six months the people of the British Empire must be prepared “just to hang on” Tmtil the trickle of help from the United States grew to a stream and ultimately into a great torrent.
“I have every reason to know that we have not yet reached the lowest point in our fortunes. We shall need every ounce of courage that God has given us.”
Mr. Menzies made the following points: The British Empire’s escape from utter defeat in the past 12 months was one of the miracles of history • . . the present task was to slow down the progress of the enemy . ... the main theatre of the land war for months to come will be in the Middle East. Britain, he said, would probably sweep the night raider out of the skies by the end of the year—and would need to.
