RECONQUEST BID?
FREE FRENCH AFRICA ARMS MOVED TO DAKAR DESERTIONS TO DE GAULLE <E!«c. Tot. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. May 31, 2 p.m.) LONDON, May 30. The French Vice-Premier, Admiral Darlan, is apparently preparing to reconquer Free French West Africa in accordance with a promise given to Germany, says the Berne correspondent of the Evening Standard. Sixteen French convoys are reported to have arrived at Dakar laden with men, tanks, guns and armoured cars which Germany has returned to France. A Considerable amount of petrol has been shipped. Several squadrons of warplanes are . expected to go to Morocco shortly. The shipments are being made in tremendous haste, the ships returning from Dakar in ballast although great quantities of much needed produce are awaiting transport to Franee. General de Gaulle’s forces have reported activity in Dakar’s hinterland, and desertions by members of the air force to the Free French have reached such proportions that the Dakar authorities now allow pilots only the bare minimum supply of petrol for their assignment. However, another four planes reached Free French airfields recently. Military patrols get “captured” with remarkable frequency.
