INSPIRATION TO ALL
ALLIED COMMANDER MAJOR-GEN. FREYBERG. (N.Z.E.F. Official News Service.) (Per Cable and Wireless Limited.) (Reed. June 2, 9 a.m.) CAIRO, May 31. In spacious man-made caves of Crete the New Zealand division commander. Major-General B. C. Freyberg, who was in charge of the Allied forces, held councils of war. Throughout the Cretan campaign he worked from early morning till late into the night, living a simple, regular life, eating plain soldier’s food and wearing throughout the campaign the clothes he stood in. He was cool and deliberate —an inspiration to all who passed. BERLIN TALE REFUTED (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 9 a.m. RUGBY, May 31. The War Office states with reference to a German statement alleging the death of Major-General B. C. Freyberg: "We are glad to be able to announce that he is alive and with his troops.” The Berlin radio stated yesterday that Major-General Freyberg had been killed in a plane crash, en route to Alexandria from Crete.
