THOUSANDS OF TROOPS SAFE

ENORMOUS TOLL TAKEN OF INVADERS ALLIED LOSSES ADMITTEDLY SEVERE (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. June 2, 31 a.m.) LONDON, June 1. Approximately 15,000 Allied troops, British, Australian, and New Zealand have been safely evacuated from Crete, according to a communique issued from headquarters in Cairo. No information is yet available to indicate what proportion of the forces in Crete were able to leave the island. It is stated that enormous losses were inflicted upon the Germans before they secured possession of the island, but it is also admitted that the Allied losses were severe. It is assumed that the Allied commander in Crete, Major-General B. C. Freyberg, V.C., left the island with his forces.
