REGENT THEATRE

“SIRiKE UP THE BAND” ".Garland. Rooney and Rhythm" is, perhaps, the most accurate description of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s entertaining musical film, “Strike Up the Band,” which is pleasing large audiences at the Regent Theatre. The picture presents Mickey Rooney at his best. All the characteristics that have made him famous and endeared him lo filmgoers the world over are seen in this offering. Moreover, Judy Garland is given greater opportunities than before for her maturing talent. For the ebullient Rooney there is a part that might almost have been a labour of love. He is cast as a youthful adherent to the charms of z band, and most especially cf the drums. Comedy provides much of the entertainment in this picture and hilarious sequences, satirising old-time melodramas embellished with such ancient ditties as "Heaven Will Protect .1 Working Girl,” keep the audience neatly amused. Paul Whiteman and his band make an impressive appearance. Capping oil’ an extremely popular programme is an excellent "first-half.” which includes "More About Nostradamus.” and the Regent news review. "Strike Up the Band” will continue its season until Thursday.
