NEWS OF THE DAY

Army Rugby A Rugby football match programme received recently from Bristol has particular interest in Gisborne. The programme sets out the teams which met in a game between the New Zealand Army fifteen and a West of England side in Briftol in December. The game was won by New Zealand by 13 points to eight. The New Zealand team contained E. A. Newton, Waikohu and Poverty Bay representative in 1938, who will be remembered in Gisborne as an excellent forward. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs, A. M. Newton, Puha.

Waiapu-Matakaoa Home Guard “With the issue of the emergency regulations, action was taken on the East Coast to organise the Home Guard. The response has been remarkable, and to date some 1270 men have enrolled in the Guard and in various divisions of the emergency precautions services,” stated the chairman of the Waiapu County Council, Mr. D. W. W. Williams, at the annual meeting of the council this week. ‘Guard parades show a good average attendance, and organisation of various branches of the emergency precautions service still proceeds. Should an emergency arise, the Waiapu-Matakaoa district will have a force and an organisation to assist in dealing with the emergency.”—Special.

Bright Outlook For Farmers’ Union “We have reason to be more than pleased with the financial position, and the outlook' for the coming year is bright,” said Mr. J. E. Benson, president of the Poverty Bay provincial branch of the Farmers’ Union, at the annual meeting yesterday. He explained that a few years ago there was a debit of £I4OO, but that had been gradually reduced. However, on that account the work of the union had been hampered tremendously. In moving the adoption of the balance sheet, Mr. Benson said he did not think it, fair that the small dairy farmer should pay the same subscription as the sheepfarmer. It was the only branch in New Zealand where the smaller man had to pay £l. He explained that the levies had risen from 6s to 11s, which was a great drain on the subscriptions. The motion was seconded by Mr. T. R. Jones, who congratulated the president and secretary on the financial position.
