CHANGE TO CHEESE

EFFORTS IN WAIKATO OLD FACTORIES FOR USE With an output of 28,000 tons of cheese as its objective for the 1941-42 season, or an increase of 10,000 tons over the record production of 1940-41. the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Company, Limited, has undertaken a great deal of organisation work in arranging for constructional alterations to its cheese factories, and for the conversion of its numerous caseinprecipitating stations. Referring to the work in hand, the general manager, Mr. C. J. Parlane, said it. was proposed to alter its cheese factories to enable night shifts to be worked, and this would involve the enlarging of the curing accommodation. A survey was being made with a view to the possible opening of the casein stations which * were closed down last year, and the conversion of them into cheese factories, said Mr. Parlane. These stations were at Karapiro, Drury, Papakura, Bombay, Buckland, Mangatawhiri and Patcrangi.

Mr. Parlanc said that one of the biggest projects the company had in hand was the reopening of the Waharoa cheese factory, which was closed down some years ago. When this factory was in operation, night and day shifts were worked, and the output equalled 2000 tons per annum. After being idle for approximately seven years, the Tamahere dairy factory, owned by the Cambridge Cooperative Dairy Company, Limited, which was built 50 years ago, is to be used in the drive for increased cheese production. Originally a skimming station, the building was converted for use as a cheese factory in 1913. It will require to be completely reequipped and is expected to be in use for the 1941-42 season.
