Now Road Completed
An important roading connection in the King Country has been completed, giving Taumarunui and Ohura residents direct access to the sea at Tongaporutu, a small township immediately north of Mount Messenger on the New Plymoutli to Te Kuiti highway. From the coast the road follows a valley through Okau and then commences a long climb through magnificent native forest to the summit of the Waitaanga Saddle, approximately 1250 ft. above sea level. It then drops down through Ohura to join the Taumarunui River road,- the Tangarakau Gorge highway and the direct northern access roads to Piopio and Te Kuiti. The opening of the new road brings Ohura within 70 miles of New Plymouth. According to the Automobile Association (Auckland), discretion should be exercised during the winter, as parts of the hill road may be subject to slips.
