“WORN VERY THIN”
' COOK COUNTY ROADS ENGINEER’S REPORT ATTENTION URGED Advice that roads in the county required attention was given to the Cook County Council yesterday by the acting county engineer, Mr. .J. Gunn. “Several sections of the highways controlled by the county are in need of a maintenance seal coat," Mr. Gunn stated. “I have discussed this work with Mr. O. G. Thornton, and it was considered important that it be carried out this year. The highways in question have had practically no money spent on surface repairs for over six years.
“On gravel roads only bare maintenance has been carried out during the past year, and many roads have worn very thin, though this is not evident unless close inspection- is made. This should not be allowed to take place, as eventually it costs much more to bring them back to their original strength. Graders will keep the surface of the gravel roads in good order, though the depth oi tlie gravel may be very thir..
“Metal Roads in Back Country.— Many of these have a hand-broken base course, and unless a wearing course of fine metal is applied at intervals a loss of depth in the base course will take place. Graders can do no good on these roads unless this wearing course is maintained, and eventually the shape of the road is lost. This has happened on Parikanapa road, and will happen on the Hangaroa-Tahora and some other roads if not taken in hand at an early date. lam not suggesting that the council provide money for improvements to these roads, but that essential maintenance be kept up."
