OBITUARY
The death last week of Mr. F. Mawhinney in Wellington South represents a severe loss to the friendly society movement in New Zealand.
An Auckland paper records the death of Mr. Frederick S. Potter, aged 34, of Panmure, a generous benefactor to the city One of Mr. Potter's gifts was ail area of land which he pre-' sented to the Mount Eden Borough Council 25 years ago' and which is named Potter’s Park. A Masterton message reports the death of Miss Catherine Chamberlain, .vhich occurred suddenly in Auckland on Saturday, when she was on a visit to her sister, Mrs. D. J. Graham. The second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. 2. Chamberlain of “Rosswood,” Upper pi din, the ■ late Miss. Chamberlain, had resided almost all her life at the Upper Plain, and had recently taken up her residence in Masterton. Mbs Chamberlain is survived by three sisters. Mrs. G. McGregor, Sydney; Mrs. D. J. Graham, Papakura; and Mrs. James Smith, Khandallah: and two brothers, Mr. W. E. Chamberlain. Gisborne: and Mr. A. Chamberlain, Waverley.
Advice has been received of the death of Dr. J. C. S. (Stuart) McDouall, who was an old Oamaru boy. He was the eldest son of Mrs. and the late Mr. W. C. McDouall. He was posted to the colonial medical service in West Africa, where he served for 27 years. He was stationed at Gold Coast, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone, and before retiring was a member of the Executive Council, and was awarded the 0.8. E. lie retired in 1933, and made his home in Devon. England. On the outbreak of tlw present war he offered his services as surgeon, and was engaged on a troopship for some months, until compelled by ill-health to give up the position. He is survived by his wife and four children.
