Engagements
Redmond —Shanks. —An engagement is announced between Driver Ronald Henry, youngest son of Mrs. Redmond and the late Mr. 11. O. Redmond, Whatatulu, and Janet Catherine, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Shanks, Mangapouri, Waingake. Willock —Becdie,—An engagement is announced between John Seymour, youngest son of Mr, and Mrs. W. R. B. Willock. Gisborne, and Jean, eldest daughter of Dr. W. and Mrs. Becdie, Dannevirke. Jolly Party Informality marked the jolly party given by Dr. W. A. Bowie and Mrs. Bowie, at their home, Kaiti esplanade, on Thursday night for their son, Gunner D. R. R. Bowie. Shaded asters were used in the decoration of the drawing-room and in the dining-room, where refreshments were served, calendulas gave a note of colour to the table. The hostess looked smart in a frock ol honey-coloured cloque printed in a floral design in gay colours relieved with white pipings. Women’s United Fellowship On Wednesday afternoon Mrs. A. Blakemore presided over an attendance of ICO at a meeting of the Women’s United Fellowship, held in the Wesley Church, Bright street. Prayers were led by Mrs. Dawson, and a Scripture-reading by Mrs. W. Poole followed. After devotions, the president extended a cordial welcome to the visitors from the various local churches and also to Sister Merle Farland, from the Solomon Islands. A vocal solo was rendered charmingly by Mrs. Rutherford, of the Te Hapara Methodist Church, and Mesdames Markey and Hambly, of the Baptist Church, were heard in a vocal duet. Miss L. Brook presided at the organ.
Sister Merle Farland, who is on furlough from the Methodist Solomon Islands Mission, gave a graphic description of the work in the Islands, with special reference to the medical work carried out under the auspices of the mission. The roll call was responded to by representatives of the following churches: St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, Knox Presbyterian, Baptist, Church of Ch:' • . Salvation Army, and Methodist. At ibe conclusion of the meeting afternoon tea was served in the schoolroom at small flower-decked tables by the ladies of the Methodist Church, under the direction of Mrs. J. Chrisp. Pink and white belladonna lilies, combined with white and mauve Michaelmas daisies, had been arranged in the church by Mesdames A. R. Smith and P. Mclntyre, who were also responsible for the decoration of the school-room with brilliantly-hued zinnias, marigolds, golden rod, Michaelmas daisies, and dahlias.
