HISTORIC GUM TREE
The removal of sand at Orua Bay. Awhitu, has led to fears for the survival of. an aged red yum tree, tie blooms of which have delighted res:-dents-of the bay and visiters for many years. , A deputation which interviewed the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, in Auckland, sought the co-operation of the Government with the Franklin County Council in efforts to save the tree. It was pointed or.l that the seed of the red gum tree was brought from Australia in 183(1 by the Rev. James Hamlin, when he established the mission station at Orua Bay. “It is a most historic tree." commented Mr. Parry, “and besides, a beautiful specimen. I feel that its age and history will interest all tree lovers. I will convey the representations to the Franklin County Council, which bodv, I am sure will be helpful.”
