FEBRUARY REVENUE CUSTOMS COLLECTIONS BEER & SALES TAX DROP A substantial rise in customs revenue in Gisborne in February more than offset the heavy drop in beer excise and sales tax collections, the total revenue collected through the Customs Department for the month being about £llOO more than that for February. 1940. Customs collections yielded £5386 2s Id last month, as against £2476 16s 9d for February of last year. Beer excise payments were £2385 10s 3d, as against £3009 2s 6d, and sales tax fell to £894 3s lid from the 1940 figure of £2OBO 19s 6d. The sales tax payments for February are one of the lowest, if not the lowest, in Gisborne since the inception of the tax.
The total Gisborne revenue for the month was £8665 16s 3d, as against £7566 18s 9d for February, 1940.
