RAIDERS OVER ENGLAND MANY HOUSES WRECKED (British Official Wiveloss.) Reed. 11 a.m. RUGBY, Feb. 27. An Air Ministry communique states: “Enemy air activity last night was on a considerable scale, mainly over the southern half of England. “Bombs were dropped in east, southeast and south-west England and South Wales, but there was no heavy attack in any area. Houses were damaged and a number of fires were promptly subdued.” Enemy raiders during the night operated earlier than for some time. The “all-clear” signal was given well before midnight. Rescuers worked in the darkness to reach victims trapped in debris when bombs wrecked homes in a southeast town. High explosive bombs demolished 10 houses in one London district. Seven persons were Seriously injured and others are believed to have been trapped by the debris. Incendiary and high explosive bombs were dropped in a Thames Estuary town, considerably damaging houses and public buildings. A Welsh co.astal town was severely raided for some hours. An Admiralty communique • states: “A Heinkel 111, which approached some of our small units in the North Sea this morning, was promptly and hotly engaged. The aircraft was certainly hit and was last seen flying low and still losing height, with its tail well down and one engine stopped. “The weather was too rough to allow an investigation, but it is considered certain that this Heinkel did not return to its base.”
