OIL EXPLORATION
MIDHIRST CASING SET OPERATIONS AT MORERE The fortnightly bulletin of the New Zealand Petroleum Company, Limited, states: “Morere No. 1 Well.—Drill pipe recovery operations still proceeding. “Midhirst No. 1 Well.—Set 92in. casing. Drilling resumed. Present depth 5563 ft.” At the date of the last report, operations for the recovery of drilling equipment which became jammed in the hole at Morere were proceeding. The drilling column jammed during the latter part of January, at a depth of 5500 ft. The resumption of drilling at Midhirst will be noted with interest. The successful running of the 93in. casing marks a stage in the sinking of this well, which previously gave some trouble through caving. The caving ground has been sealed off now. In the previous report the depth of the Midhirst well was given as 5550 ft.
