WOULD NOT HELP
DEFENCE OF COUNTRY OBJECTION TO SERVICE (Per Press Association.) ASHBURTON, this day. Before the Armed Forces Appeal Board, Clifton Charles, a school teacher in the country and a member of a sect styled Christian Assemblies, said that taking the oath of allegiance would be against his conscience. He said he would assist wounded persons as a civilian, but he . would not join the ambulance service. He conceded that the State was in . dire necessity of defending itself, but he would not help. He did not think so much of his job in relation to conscience. He woiild be against any military work, even if ordered at the point of the bayonet or being placed before a firing squad. Decision was reserved.
