EMPIRE PLANES HAVOC IN AFRICA LOSSES TO ITALIANS RAZING OF AERODROMES TRANSPORT AND BASES (Elcc. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (British Official Wireless.) Reed. 2.30 p.m. RUGBY, Feb. 24. A Royal Air Force Middle East communique states: “In Eritrea yesterday a South African squadron made a low-flying machine-gun attack on aircraft on the landing ground at Malcale and destroyed five 579 and three CR32 machines and seriously damaged several other S79’s. A fourth CR32 was shot down from the air. “On Saturday a Royal Air Force fighter shot down another 579 north of Massawa. Further south at Neghelli, Abyssinia, South African bombers registered direct hits on motor transport, dumps and warehouses. In the Brava area, Italian Somaliland, yesterday, South African bombers attacked motor transports and destroyed at least six vehicles. From all operations one bomber and one fighter have not yet returned.”
An Italian communique states: “The Jarabub garrison resisted violent attacks. Italians bombed troops and mechanised forces in the neighbourhood of Kufra, 500 miles southward of Benghazi. Fighting continued in the lower Jubaland.”
