CAUSE OF AIR CRASH

SICKNESS OF PILOT NAVIGATOR AT CONTROLS EVIDENCE AT INQUEST (Per Press Association.) FOXTON, this day. At the inquest concerning the death of Leading Aircraftsman K. Haase, which was held before a jury, evidence was given by Pilot Aircraftsman Holmes that he had been feeling run down for a fortnight prior to the crash and reported to the medical officer. On the way over from Blenheim to Ohakea, he experienced air sickness. When the navigator was taking the controls on the return trip, he said, he lost consciousness, coming to too late to avoid crashing into the river.

The jury returned a verdict that Leading Aircraftsman Haase met his death by drowning and added a rider that in view of Pilot Aircraftsman Holmes’ evidence a more rigid tes£ of a pilot’s physical fitness should be imposed before he took a machine into the air. At the conclusion of the inquest, a service inquiry was held in camera.
