OBITUARY

MR. S. G. HUTCHINSON

WELL KNOWN IN GISBORNE

(Special to tlu* Herald.) WAIROA, this day.

The death occurred early yesterday morning, at the Wairoa Hospital, o£ Mr. Stanley Gordon Hutchinson, aged 58, of Waikokopu, a well-known figure both in Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay.

The late Mr. Hutchinson was born in nytieiton and received his education in Napier. On leaving school he decided to enter on a law career and joined the staff of a firm of solicitors in Nap.er. He later resigned from his position, however, ana went to Soutn Africa.

Mr. Hutchinson saw service in the Boer War, and at the cessation of hostilities joined the Cape Mounted Police Force. He returned to Hew 'Zealand about a year after peace had been declared, setting up in business as a storekeeper at Mohaka. For some years he travelled for the Napier firm of Robjohns, Hindmarsh and Company, but later severed his connection with this firm and engaged in. farming in the Gisborne district. Latterly, he took up residence at Waikokopu with his brother, Mr. H. S. Hutchinson, harbourmaster at the port.

The late Mr. Hutchinson took a keen interest in horse racing, and at one time was actively connected with the Wairoa Racing Club. He was associated with the. late Mr. G. C. Ormond in his efforts to have the racecourse shifted to its present site. He bred several good racehorses, including 'Slippery, Royal Damon and several others.

He leaves a widow and several brothers and sisters to mourn their lpss. The funeral will take place at the Wairoa cemetery to-day at 2 p.m.
