WAR VETERAN'S DEATH

SERVICE IN CYPRUS MR. SIDNEY W. GARLEY The death of Mr. Sidney William Garley on Saturday removes a veteran of the Imperial forces in the last war and one who was well known in Gisborne as the custodian of the Memorial Home.

Mr. Garley, who was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, 51 years ago, joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1910, and was sent with his unit to Egypt in that year. He was there at the outbreak of the last war, but in the following year was sent to Cyprus, where he remained until the conclusion of hostilities, being returned to England in 1919. Towards the close of the war he was married in Cyprus to Miss Grace Moore. Following his return to ~ England, Mr. Garley was posted to the army reserve, and came to New Zealand, joining the defence force in Wellington 21 years ago. In 1936 he came to Gisborne to take up the position of custodian at the Memorial Hbme, a position from which be resigned a few months ago owing to ill health. As a result of his training with the Royal Army Medical Corps, he interested himself in organisations for training in first aid, and was particularly helpful in youth work. The deceased is survived by the widow and three daughters, Misses Gwen, Jean and Grace, to whom the sympathy of their many friends will be extended. The interment was at the soldiers’ plot, Taruheru Cemetery, this afternoon.
