ASSAULT ON FATHER

FINE IMPOSED ON SON MAGISTRATE'S ADVICE Remanded from December 16, the case in which James Henry Williams, a labourer aged 21, was charged with assaulting his father Martin Williams, was heard before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court to-day. The accused who was represented bv M'\ .T. S. Wauchop, pleaded not guilty. The complainant, Martin Williams, who gave evidence alleged that on the early morning of December 15 the accused came to his bedroom and struck him on the eye, the nose and the throat without provocation. Constable Greggan, who was called by the complainant after he had been assaulted, also gave evidence that when he saw the complainant he had bicod on. his face and shirt and that he was sober, but had been drinking. He took a statement from the accused in which he alleged that hi-s father had struck his mother and also wanted to fight him. After seeing his mother hit, the boy had struck his father in return. Constable Greggan said that the hov had a good reputation and was a steady worker. There had been quarrels in the house for some time and he had been called in once to arrest the - father for disorderly behaviour while drunk. J i fining the accused £2 Mr. Walton said that there appeared to be provocation but that could not be taken as an excuse.
