TREAT FOR TROOPS

ICE CREAM IN EGYPT PLANT FROM N.Z. The provision of plant for the manufacture of ice cream and cooling drinks for soldiers in Egypt is being considered, the Governor-General, Viscount Galway, told a meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Provincial Patriotic Council. He said the temperature in the desert was so hot that it imposed a severe strain and discomfort on those forced to campaign there. “We are trying, therefore, to get plant to make ices and cooling drinks sent- across to our men in the desert,” His Excellency said. “That would also provide ice cream for hospitals. We shall need some more mobile canteens for transport purposes if our venture is successful. It is largely a health question, for ice cream made in Egyptian bazaars from unclean utensils and impure water breeds malaria and dysentery.” Lord Galway said the adequacy of the hutments at all the training camps showed that the money was well spent.

"We do not propose to make another appeal from the central fund,” he said. “We want all the money to go into the coffers of the provinces, but we are bound to require a lot of money for the prosecution of the war, and the centre will call on the provinces for that. We must provide for the health and happiness of our men overseas, making our keynote generosity without extravagance.”
