“BACK ON THE JOB”

DIGGERS’ COMMITTEE REHABILITATION ISSUE COOKING DEMONSTRATION Refreshed by a short lour of duty “out of tire line," members of the' social committee of the Gisborne Returned Soldiers’ Association again came back io the task of raising funds for rehabilitation purposes last evening, when a meeting was held to discuss arrangements for a cooking uemons'cration and display to be held in the City Hall on December 12 anti 13. One step promptly taken by the committee was to absorb into its ranks a number of women whose services were co-opted for the queen carnival campaign, and whose aid was largely responsible for the excellent effort of the R.S.A. candidate. It was felt that, with a programme of work likely to last for flic duration of the war—and six months after —the committee could not afford to lose the services of these women. Details of the cooking demonstration were discussed at length, and it was agreed that the display should form the central feature of a Paddy’s market, conducted on lines similar to those of the feature which realised £332 for the queen carnival lurici. Mrs. J. Gunn, who is to be the chief demonstrator, was given authority to complete details ol her department, and a women's committee was appo.nted to supervise details of tea. sweets, cakes, and other stalls, while a parallel committee of men took responsibility for erecting stalls and ..i.i_.aiing games of skill in connection v...;> Llic market. New Year’s Eve Gala. The social committee received a deputation from the Gisborne ThirtyThousand Club, for which Mr. Jas. Chrisp acted as spokesman, putting forward a suggestion that the two bodies should combine to organise a Now Year's Eve gala at the Waikanae Beach, dividing the proceeds. Mr. Chrisp stated that his club was well aware that the R.S.A. had been promised the date for their usual function at the beach, and that if a joint effort could be arranged the Thirty-Thousand Club would be indebted to the Diggers’ organisation for the opportunity to share in the proceeds. Mr. F. Barwick, chairman of the R.S.A. social committee, raised the question of entertainment, and it was agreed that the Thirty-Thousand Club would organise the entertainment side of the gala, apart from the customary games which the Diggers have managed in previous years. The R.S.A. responsibility would cover the games, gates, and parking arrangements. This tentative proposal was adopted by the Diggers’ committee, and a subcommittee was appointed to work with a similar group from the ThirtyThousand Club in organising the gala.
