INCREASE OPPOSED

ROAD FREIGHT RATES FARMERS' OBJECTIONS (Per Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., this day. At a sitting of No. 2 transport authority, submissions were made by the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance for increased rates throughout the authority’s area on the ground of increased costs such as petrol and wages. These requests were contested by Lhe Farmers’ Union, who contended that the farmers were meeting the war effort without additional income and therefore transporters should bear part of the war burden similarly. The union said that a tribunal should be set up to examine transport charges in terms of the report of the Economic Stabilisation Committee. The authority said the matter of the Railway Department reducing freight charges might be represented to the Government to assist primary industry. The matter of revising the schedules is now to be investigated by lhe authority.
