U.S. AID FOR BRITAIN
EX-SERVICEMEN’S VIEW AMERICAN LEGION NEW YORK, Sept. 26. The A merican Legion, which, in 1939, voted for strict neutrality, yesterday, at its annual convention in Boston, gave almost unanimous approval to a resolution in favour of the United States giving all practicable aid to Britain, and further recommended a defence programme far beyond the present Government plans. The conference urged the adoption of a permanent system of conscription. The leaders termed the resolution a most important step towards the support of Britain. Addressing the convention, Mr. William Green, president of the American Federation of Labour, said the American people felt that a victory for Britain was vital to the security of the United States, as a result of which it would seem logical for Americans to extend to Britain and her heroic army and navy all the support possible, short of war. Sympathy with Britain’s war effort was expressed by the United States National War Committee. Next Sunday is being designated “Great Britain’s Sunday,” and an appeal is being made to all Americans to observe it as a day of national prayer for the British people. Mr. Pierrepont Moffat, in his first public speech as the United States Minister to Canada, said at Ottawa: “Within the past weeks we have witnessed a development which demonstrated how deep the roots of friendship have grown between Canada and the United States. “The establishment of a joint United States and Canadian defence board marks a milestone in our relations. That this association of our countries should occur when Canada is at war is worthy of note. Canada has pledged herself to make every effort and to accept every sacrifice in the prosecution of the war. The deep significance of this struggle is not lost upon us.” !
