INCREASE IN WAGES
COOK COUNTY STAFF GENERAL ORDER EFFECT The payment of the 5 per cent increase in wages to Workers employed under award conditions was sanctioned by the Cook County Council to-day. Previously the council had agreed to withhold’ payment in view of an application by the County Councils’ Industrial Union of Employers for exemption from the general order, but as that application had been refused the council decided to make the payment retrospective from August 12. The county clerk, Mr. F. T. Robinson, in a review of the position, stated that if the council granted the 5 per cent increase to all members of the staff the additional requirements would amount to £l6O 13s in the Clerical division and engineering staff, and £845 to outside workers for a full year, or from August 12 to March 31 the amounts would be £9B 17s for inside men and £520 to outside workers. Where the Social Security Department was providing subsidies on salaries or wages, the department was not prepared to increase the subsidy rate. One officer was subsidised by the department to the extent of £3 10s a week. The council considered the matter of salaries and wages in committee, but, apart from deciding on the payment of the 5 per cent increase on awarjj wages, had not completed its deliberations on other points when the luncheon adjournment was taken.
