BIRD SANCTUARY
WHANGAREI HARBOUR REQUEST TO MINISTER (l’er Press Association.) WHANGAREI, this day. The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, who is paying an official visit to Whangarei, last evening met representatives of the Harbour Board and Acclimatisation Society tp discuss a proposal by the board that the harbour area be declared a bird sanctuary. The Acclimatisation Society urged the closing of the area for a period. The Minister to-day is making a launch tour to get first-hand information. Mr. Parry last night emphasised the need for measures to preserve bird life and expressed his willingness to create a Department of Wild Life to achieve the object. Mr. Parry will go to Kaitaia to-mor-row to open the centennial memorial.
