WEDDING TRAGEDY
FIRE DESTROYS HOUSE GROOM BURNED TO DEATH ESCAPE OF YOUNG FIANCEE MELBOURNE, Oct. 4. A man who was to have been married to-day and his younger brother were burned to death in a fire which destroyed an old weatherboard house in Upwey early this morning. They were Mr. William Arthur Knox, jun., aged 21, an employee of the Defence Department, and Noel Knox, aged nine. Mr. Knox, sen., was awakened by the fire about 3 a.m. After giving the alarm, he escaped from the house with his wife, four members of the family, and Miss Joyce Hunter, aged 19, William Knox’s fiancee. It was then discovered that William and Noel Knox were missing. Mr. Knox tried to run back into the house, but was driven back by flames. One of the girls smashed a window in the boys’ room, but she, too, was unable to reach them. The house burned fiercely, and was destroyed by the time the fire brigade arrived. For a time, surrounding properties were in danger from sparks, and neighbours helped members of the fire brigade to beat out small fires. The explosions of cartridges from two firearms in the house continued after it had collapsed.
