UNHAPPY SPAIN
ACUTE FOOD SHORTAGE NEW YORK, Sept. 26. Between German propaganda and ' the British blockade, Spain is an unhappy, suffering country, says the Lisban correspondent of the New York Times. Nazi propaganda is very busy, for foreign newspapers cannot be purchased. Food supplies are Spain’s greatest difficulty, the correspondent says. The bread is uneatable, the meat revolting, and luxuries are not even thought of. Petrol is very scarce. Spain’s soldiers are lamentably lacking in equipment, and thus outwardly it appears impossible that a country so recently engaged in its own deadly struggle would willingly take any part in the present war. Such participation would probably be fatal to the nation, even if fighting were unnecessary.
