PRAISE BY JUDGES

‘PROFESSIONAL TOUCH’ TRIBUTE TO COMPETITORS COMPETITIONS FESTIVAL GOOD STAGE EFFECTS “The professional touch” of the performers was commented on again by j the judges at the Gisborne Competi- j tions Society's festival in lhe Opera] House last night. The house was' filled by a very responsive audience, which was not slow to show its appreciation of the work of the competitors. "Charming and delightful” was the verdict, of the dancing judge, Miss Jeane Horne, Wellington, on the ballets and dances. She congratulated the teachers responsible on the excellent training of their pupils. “Your dancers here are lucky to have such a good stage and such good lighting effects for your performances,” she added. “It is a wonderful experience for you are dancing under professional conditions. I come from a place where the conditions are at their worst, and it does make a great difference to the performances." Mr. Allan F. McSkimming, judge of the elocutionary items, reserved his comments for the final night of the festival. Special praise for the negro spiritual numbers was given by Mr. Hamilton Dickson, judge of the music section. “I have rather a weakness for this type of music," he said, “and the performance to-night was really outstanding." He also paid a tribute to the performers in the sacred solo class, and mentioned the difficulty he had had in deciding the winner in this and also in the piano solo section.
