Important steps to speed up the ,Empire air scheme were announced to-day by the acting Minister for Air, Mr. A. Fadden, who said that the number of pilots selected for training in Canada would be increased and the intake of pilot trainees would be increased correspondingly. Mr. Fadden explained that the whole idea was to cut the training period by half. About 31,000 men had been selected for the Royal Australian Air Force under the Empire air scheme, said Mr. Fadden. Plans were now being completed for speeding up the output of pilots for dispatch to Canada for advanced training. About 2000 air crew personnel were now undergoing elementary training and the intake at the flying Schools from those selected was being steadily increased. About 600 would begin training on Monday, comprising 340 pilots, 160 air gunners and 92 air observers.
